Mentor, Maths (STEM)

Your Role and Responsibilities
We are looking for a STEM Maths Mentor who will advise and motivate students on their mathematical learning journey. You will provide mentorship, academic support, and advice to K-12 students in collaboration with Discovery Education and Thimble.io to help them develop a solid understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking abilities, as well as encourage them to get involved in STEM courses. This position requires an interest in science, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to inspire and motivate children to pursue STEM careers.

The following list of typical responsibilities you will take on is indicative, not exhaustive. You’ll have a reasonable workload that can assure high-quality results
  • Provide one-on-one or group mentorship to K-12 students, offering guidance, encouragement, and support in their STEM studies
  • Provide clear and effective instruction on mathematical topics and concepts, catering to students' individual needs and learning styles. Explain complex mathematical ideas in a simplified manner, ensuring students grasp the fundamental principles.
  • Collaborate with the Discovery Education and Thimble.io team to develop lesson plans, and educational resources to enhance students' learning experience.
  • Assess students' strengths and weaknesses and tailor instruction to meet their individual needs, ensuring a personalized learning experience.
  • Facilitate and guide students in conducting hands-on experiments and mathematical application projects to deepen their understanding of STEM education.
  • Provide insight and information about potential STEM career paths, higher education opportunities, and the importance of STEM in various industries.
  • Inspire and motivate students to explore and pursue STEM fields, promoting curiosity, creativity, and a passion for scientific discovery
  • Track and monitor students' progress, identifying areas for improvement and implementing strategies to help them succeed.
  • Collaborate with fellow mentors, educators, and parents to create a supportive and enriching learning environment for students.
Qualifications and Skills
Mandatory
To qualify to enter the selection process for this job, you must meet the following minimum criteria. Please DO NOT apply if you do not meet these criteria:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a STEM/Science-related field (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Mathematics) or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and their applications in STEM.
  • 2-3 years od experience working with students, particularly children, in an educational institute tutoring, or mentoring capacity is necessary.
Preferred
If you have the following skills/competence, you’ll have a competitive advantage in our selection process compared to others:
  • Good understanding and awareness of STEM Education Syllabus.
  • Knowledge of educational technologies and online learning platforms is an advantage.
  • Published work would be advantageous
